Palm Oil Flow Meter DN80 In-Line Blending Sizing Verification

Quick Answer: For palm oil blending lines with DN80 piping, a Coriolis mass flow meter is the preferred choice when accuracy below ±0.2% and direct mass flow reading are critical. Oval gear meters also work for higher viscosities if cost is a constraint. Sizing verification requires matching the meter flow range with your actual blend ratios, minimum and maximum flow, and palm oil viscosity at operating temperature.

Why DN80 Is the Common Size for Palm Oil Blending Lines

Many palm oil processing plants in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand use DN80 (3 inch) lines for blending crude palm oil with diesel, methanol, or other additives. The line size comes from a balance between flow capacity and pressure drop. A typical blending skid for biodiesel production moves 10 to 50 cubic meters per hour. DN80 keeps the fluid velocity between 1 and 3 m/s, which is ideal for most flow meter types.

We have seen this on customer sites many times. A plant manager in Sumatra told us they tried reducing to DN65 to save cost. The higher velocity caused cavitation in their positive displacement meter. They switched back to DN80 and the meter lasted for years without repair.

Selecting the Right Flow Technology for Palm Oil

At Silver Instruments, we supply two main meter types for palm oil blending: Coriolis mass flow meters and oval gear positive displacement meters. Coriolis meters measure mass flow directly and also output density and temperature. This helps when you blend by mass ratio, not volume. Palm oil density changes with temperature. A Coriolis meter compensates automatically, giving you true mass flow in kg/h.

Oval gear meters work well when the palm oil viscosity is above 20 cP. Palm oil at 40 to 50 °C typically has a viscosity of 30 to 45 cP. This is still within the sweet spot for oval gear meters. But at lower temperatures, viscosity can rise above 80 cP, causing high pressure drop. In practice, most engineers skip the viscosity check. That is a mistake. We always ask for the minimum operating temperature before we size an oval gear meter for DN80.

Electromagnetic flow meters are not suitable here. Palm oil is non-conductive. Ultrasonic meters can work, but they struggle with entrained air or solids common in unrefined palm oil. We rarely recommend them for blending.

Sizing Verification Steps for Inline Blending

When a customer sends us a request for a DN80 palm oil flow meter, we verify the meter size using four steps.

Step one is defining the minimum and maximum controlled flow rate for each blend component. For example, a plant blends palm oil at 5 t/h minimum and 30 t/h maximum. The meter turndown must cover this range.

Step two is checking the actual viscosity at the lowest operating temperature. We ask the customer to provide the viscosity in centipoise (cP) or to tell us the temperature and oil grade so we can estimate. For palm olein at 35 °C, viscosity can be 50 cP. At 50 °C, it drops to around 28 cP. This shift affects the Reynolds number and therefore the meter accuracy curve.

Step three is confirming the pressure rating and wetted material. Palm oil is not corrosive, so stainless steel 316L is standard. But if the line pressure reaches 40 bar, we need to verify the meter housing and flange rating. Our DN80 Coriolis meters come standard with PN40 or ANSI 150 flanges, but PN63 is available on request.

Step four is reviewing installation conditions. Blending lines often have tight spaces. We need the straight run requirements. Coriolis m

eters do not need upstream straight pipe. Oval gear meters also do not need it, but they require a strainer upstream to protect against particles.

A Real Installation in a Malaysian Palm Oil Facility

Last year, a biodiesel producer in Johor, Malaysia contacted Silver Automation Instruments. They needed two DN80 flow meters for an inline blending system mixing palm oil methyl ester with diesel. The target blend ratio was B20. They required mass flow measurement because the blend specification was in mass percentage.

We proposed our SIL-CMF080 Coriolis mass flow meter with 4-20 mA HART output and density signal. The operating flow was 8 to 25 t/h. The palm oil temperature was 45 °C, viscosity 32 cP. We verified the sizing and confirmed a pressure drop below 0.3 bar at maximum flow. The meter has been running for 14 months with zero drift and no maintenance. The plant engineer told us they check the density reading monthly against a lab hydrometer and the deviation is always less than 0.001 g/cm³.

What Data We Need to Confirm Your DN80 Flow Meter Sizing

To give you a firm sizing report and price quote, please send us the following specifications:

Fluid: crude palm oil, palm olein, palm stearin, or biodiesel blend. Pipe size (DN). Flow range: minimum, normal, and maximum in kg/h or t/h. Operating pressure in bar. Operating temperature in °C. Viscosity at operating temperature, if known. Blending ratio target and required accuracy. Preferred output signal: 4-20 mA HART, Modbus, or pulse.

Send these details to our technical team through the inquiry form on flow-meter.com.au. We will return a datasheet with metering skid layout suggestions within one working day.

FAQ

Can I use an oval gear meter for a DN80 palm oil blending line?
Yes, many plants use oval gear meters for palm oil blending because they handle high viscosity and offer turndown up to 10:1. But you must verify the pressure drop at minimum temperature. If viscosity exceeds 100 cP, the pressure loss may be too high for your pump. Silver Instruments provides oval gear meters with optional heating jackets for this scenario.

What is the typical accuracy for Coriolis meters on palm oil?
Our SIL-CMF series achieves ±0.1% to 0.2% of reading for mass flow. Density accuracy is ±0.5 kg/m³. This is stable even with viscosity changes because Coriolis meters are insensitive to fluid properties.

Do I need a straight run for a DN80 Coriolis meter?
No straight run is required. This is a big advantage in compact blending skids. You can install an elbow directly before the meter without affecting accuracy.

How do I verify the meter size if I only know volume flow in m³/h?
We convert the volume flow to mass flow using the palm oil density at operating temperature. You can provide the density or let us estimate from standard tables. A typical palm oil density is 890 kg/m³ at 45 °C. So 30 m³/h is about 26.7 t/h. We then check this against the meter maximum capacity.

What maintenance does a DN80 flow meter require in palm oil service?
For Coriolis meters, no moving parts means almost zero maintenance. We recommend an annual zero verification. For oval gear meters, clean the internal strainer every three to six months and check the gear wear if pressure drop increases. Many customers in Southeast Asia schedule maintenance during the plant turnaround.
