Most flow meters are sized around a fixed viscosity range. A turbine meter expects a certain velocity profile. An oval gear meter has clearances that suit a narrow viscosity band. When the oil grade changes, the meter output can drift or the system pressure drop can exceed the pump capacity.


We have seen this problem on customer sites many times. A fuel oil blending skid in Indonesia was sized for 20 cSt at 50 °C. The operator switched to a residual oil at 180 cSt. The positive displacement meter became noisy and the back pressure increased from 0.8 bar to 2.6 bar. Flow dropped below the required 4,000 kg/h.


A Coriolis sensor does not have moving parts inside the flow path. It does not rely on velocity profile. It reads mass flow and density directly. That means a viscosity shift from 10 cP to 5,000 cP does not change the mass flow uncertainty in the same way. You still need to size the meter pressure drop and line velocity. But the measurement principle keeps its accuracy.



What a Coriolis Sensor Does Differently for Oil Measurement


A Coriolis flow meter drives one or two tubes at a known frequency. Oil mass passes through the vibrating tubes. The meter detects phase shift caused by mass flow and frequency change caused by density. Viscosity is not in the mass flow calculation. That is the main reason Coriolis meters handle oil grade changes better than velocity meters.


For heavy oil service, a straight tube or low frequency bent tube design may be required. High viscosity can damp the tube vibration and increase pressure drop. Handling Viscosity Shifts in Heavy Crude, Fuel Oil, and Lubricants


Heavy crude oil can change from 1,500 cP at 20 °C to 220 cP at 60 °C. Fuel oil may arrive from different suppliers with viscosity from 30 cSt to 380 cSt. Lubricant blending plants dose base oils from 8 cSt to 600 cSt into a single line. Each case has a different pressure drop curve.


A Coriolis meter sized for the highest viscosity keeps the line moving. But you may pay for a smaller line or a larger meter. The trick is to size for the highest viscosity and lowest temperature, then check the low flow performance at the thinnest oil. If the meter is too large, low flow accuracy may suffer at the bottom end.


Last year a customer in Vietnam asked us for a Coriolis meter on a marine fuel blending skid. They blended MGO at 3 cP with HFO at 700 cP in the same DN25 line. We recommended a DN15 Coriolis sensor with 4-20 mA HART output and a pressure rating of 40 bar. The meter measured 0 to 2,500 kg/h with a turndown of 50:1.
